Re draft of NME magazine Case study 2
FRONT COVER
Masthead
The masthead is big, bold and white stands out over the
black background, it also has a 3D look to it. So that it looks more exciting
and intriguing to look at. This is an abbreviation for ‘new musical express’
this would be too long at a masthead so they shortened it to much more well
known name that can easily be remembered. The font of the text looks really
cool and can engage their target audience.
Cover lines
There is two cover lines one that says ‘holy smoke it’s
Rihanna’ this links to what Rihanna is doing in the picture which is smoking.
It is the same colour as the masthead so there a colour link. The 2nd
cover lines is ‘world exclusive interview’ drags the reader in because rihanna
is such a big music artist people will this very interesting and see what she
has to say.
Flash/puff
The flash is yellow stands out over the black background it
is bold and underlined in a very simple font. It stands out very well and is on
rihanna’s sleeve. Shows the style of her interview and what’s going to be in
the article to show that there is more than just rihanna in this weekly magazine.
Audience and Institution
The NME audience is very influential in their social circles
and are twice as likely as the average to be the first amongst their friends to
know what is going on. The NME audience is very obsessed with music and they
rely on NME to give them new updates and new hip hop new artist and mainly men
read this magazine. The publisher is Mike Williams he edits the magazine and
usually gives you a message on the content page.
Colour scheme
The colour scheme is mainly black and white it gives rihanna
this and edge brings the reader in more and the yellow brings the black white
out.
Its neutral colours but it links to the main cover story
very well and gives the artist a very good look to it.
Image and cover star
The main image and cover star is rihanna she looks very
fierce and ready for anything that comes her way. We see the price of the
magazine on the t-shirt it’s big and bold and stands out on the white t –
shirt. The background is black and gives it that effect on the reader it gives
it a more serious feel to it and that she is coming out of her comfort zone or
releasing a song after a long time the image can suggest a lot of things
depends the way you see the image.
The sky line says ‘18th
September 2015/EVERY FRIDAY/ PRICE: SEE T – SHIRT’. This is a good sky line
because it gives you all the information you need what day it publishes when it
comes out and the price and it is now a free sheet and that it is a weekly
magazine.
CONTENTS PAGE
Heading/Logo
Heading is bright and stands out over the image the type of
font is copied from the cover page and is in a different colour links to the
roses in the main image. Again this reminds you what magazine it is and just
adds more excitement to the page, also underneath it says ‘hello...’ it’s like
the magazine is giving a welcome to the reader to make them feel part of the magazine
give them a good welcome.
Editor’s message
This is the editor’s message and is usually fun and drags
the reader in to take a look at the magazine and to read more of what in it. It
starts off like this ‘WELL THIS IS ALL rather exciting isn’t it’ it breaks the
ice with the read gives that connection like your almost friends with the
magazine. This is usually on the contents page welcoming the reader and
greeting them, and telling them the success of the music magazine. Here they have refereed to rihanna being on
the front cover because she totally ‘embodies the spirit of the new NME’ so
they have used some not only that draws people in but some that have thought
that represents them in a good way this is good because it targets their
audience.
Adverts
NME is a free sheet this means that they are given to the
public for free you can get them at a music store for example HMV. Now because
it is free brands and shops pay them to advertise their stuff in their magazine
and that’s where they get the money to carry NME on. The advert has a black
background stands out over white, the advert is about concerts and where you
can buy the tickets so it’s still link to music and that’s good on the contents
page because it’s a music magazine.
Contents/sections
This is the main part of the contents page which is the sections
it has features, sections and regulars. The contents is written in rows instead
of columns and I think that’s because it is a weekly magazine so it has less context
that it is working with. The features are the main pieces done in the magazine
for example the cover story on rihanna. The font is the same for all sections
titles looks more organised also the same for the editor’s message.
Colour
The background is white which gives the colours on top of it
a pop and makes it stand out more and gives it an effect, all the colours go
very well together and does not look unorganised and so the reader can reader
it with comfort instead of feeling uncomfortable that there is too much colour.
Layout
The layout is different from most magazines because the
sections have been separated by rows and not columns there is 3 rows and one
column and that is the editor’s note, the name of the magazine goes at the top
of the contents page. There is an image at the top in the middle where most
likely the readers eyes goes to the centre page. Most of the text on the
sections bit is aligned to the centre and that is done for each section.
The image is Lana Del Rey
and she is the main image on the contents page and the only big image that is
on the contents page and it’s not the same artist on the cover page. The roses
behind her represent calmness and comfort and love it can symbolise her new
album. On the image it has the page number and a very brief summary of what the
piece is about. The image is behind the
contents page maybe suggesting not as in important.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Drop Capitals
This starts the piece off the article with the word ‘she’s’
very important word and is targeted to her. The drop capitals is over 10 lines
and looks very good on the article looks professional and neat. This is used at
the start of the article usually a music magazine.
Layout
This piece is organised into 3 columns and has a Image under
the first show the price of the magazine. It has pull out quotes from her
interview and major quotes that can shock people. Some text has been put in
bold to make them stand out. The columns and the text are not aligned on the
right or the left giving it a bit of the edge. We have the extra info in
between the two columns.
Title of the article
Is simple but it stands out she does right her name like
this usually and this represents her, so it could be her logo in a way. It’s
simple but stands for something shows her edgy side of her as well as her calm
side and unique personality is.
Images
The images really show rihanna does take risk and how she
doesn’t care what people think. The first image on the right page is show the
price of the magazine on the t – shirt she still looks cool and is putting NME
in a good light because she is a popular artist and mostly everyone knows her
it was good that NME did their first FREE magazine on her. She looks cool and
hip hop this can defiantly reach out to her fans and target it them the most.
The images on the right is in the studios and is mainly close of shot of her
face her looking straight at the camera and looking away this can show a sign
of rebellion because she is swearing in one of them and parents wouldn’t
normally allow this, she still looks cool breaking the rules and looks like she
doesn’t care. The images on the left look like a collage of her that fans can
look at and enjoy her being unique. She is playing with a piece of gum in the
images and this is what cool kids usually do play with the piece of gum and
blow bubbles so this really speaks out to the target audience.
Extra/bonus information
Bonus information about rihanna and she has been doing over
the years, like she appeared bazaar magazine on a shark shows how rebellious
she is most models or sings wouldn’t do that but she did shows the side that
NME showed her as.
The
colours they have used is really simple it’s mainly black and white and pink
from the bubble gum and that is mainly it. It relates to the she pushes over
the edge and breaks the rules. The background is white and the images stand out
over the background.
Re draft of Q magazine case study 1
FRONT COVER
The Masthead
The masthead name is ‘q’ the color of the letter is white
and the background is red this makes the letter and the title of the music
magazine really ‘pop’ and stand to the audience. Since the title of the
magazine is Q it is short and very easy to remember for the target audience.
This also doesn’t confuse the audience.
It’s very simple yet attractive stands out over the main image in the
background. Originally it was to be called Cue (as in the sense of cueing a record,
ready to play), but the name was changed so that it wouldn't be mistaken for a snooker magazine.
Color Scheme
The colour scheme is used is usually there to attract the
reader and not make it boring to read. Q magazine has used red, yellow and
grey. These colour are simple and they have used the 3 colour scheme here and
that is good because there is not too much going on. And the colours link to
the band U2 especially the grey that links to them and because their main piece
in this issue of the article the colours would have to match or link. The colours
are really edgy relating to the genre very well and gives the reader a sense
that there actually in the concert with U2. The header for the main story on the
front cover looks like a stamp and it looks like they are going to be shipped
around the world.
Font consistency
Font consistency is used make everything look organised and
official also if you have different fonts it will mess up the music magazine
and it feels like there is too much things going on.
This issue of Q magazine has font consistency the only time
it doesn’t is the main story and the cover line titles so they have used 2
fonts and this goes well because it doesn’t look messy or unprofessional.
Audience and institution
The target audience of this magazine is the age of 29. This
was because people 29 were usually working and they could bring up the price to
£3.99. Founders Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. Now they are published by Bauer
media group. There average reader is very passionate about music and is there
social currency and his world. They usually live for gigs, festivals and
electrifying moments, has a professional job they live with a partner no kids
yet. Downloads music and keeps up with technology loves to have the new iPods’,
iPads and laptops. They would usually go to big gigs every week. They don’t
just stick to one genre they live to explore but there main genre is rock,
indie and pop.
Puff/flash
This is usually used when they want to promote something so
a puff/flash will pull the reader in and because of its colour red it matches
the Q magazine title. It’s usually in
the middle or on the edge of the masthead but this time it’s at the bottom
meaning it doesn’t really show relevance but it is still there to catch some
reader’s attention. It says ‘your guide
to the month in music’ with this puff it’s boosting its magazine more.
Cover lines
This is where the rest of the cover lines are, you got the
article about 50 cent and Kurt vile it’s in yellow which really stands out on
the background image. Shows you what is in the rest of the magazine as well.
Cover star
The cover star is U2and they are the main article in this
magazine, because q magazine works with artist that is coming back or new and
upcoming artist q magazine has targeted U2 to be there cover star this month.
The colour they have used is edgy and reminds you rock and hard mental, also
what they’re wearing is very over the edge and reflects there genre of music.
‘On the road and into battle’ this suggests that there going on tour and it
also reminds me of a pull out quote maybe going on tour.
Cover lines
The cover line is usually articles that will be in the music
magazine, in this case it’s about new order the music band, because they are an
old band coming back Q magazine have put them on the front cover so that their
fans can clearly see on the front cover. It also has an image of the band. Underneath
this it has the page number so that people can quickly look at it and read it
instead of searching for it.
Strap line
The strap line is “The world’s greatest music magazine” this
is to mention their success and how well know they are. This is small but still
stands out because they have used black over the red and also is a good
combination.
This is usually above the masthead or below, in this case
it’s on top.
CONTENTS PAGE
The contents page title
It has the logo ‘Q’ it’s big and stands out so people know
what magazine their reading. The title of the contents page reminds you of like
its presenting with monthly good music for example ‘the Q magazine presents...’
it draws you in to read what’s in the monthly issue.
Also it has the date of the issue to let people know how
recent or how old it is.
There is an image for
every article that is on the contents page this give the reader a sense of the
article is going to be about. It also makes the contents page more exciting
looking at the contents page I can see that there is a range of different bands
addressing different issue and different music gigs. If it’s a cover story or a
story that is very interesting they are most likely to have a bigger picture
than the other images, to draw the person in more. Most images is a full body
shots because in this issue there is more bands so they need to fit everyone in
the shot and its more effective that way. The 50 Cent article it’s only him so
he only gets a mid shot and a band called Wolf Alice also gets a mid shot. The
images are not boring at all looking at all of them together looks like its
jammed pack of good and juicy information. The images link to the story that is
going to be explained about them for example there is a picture of 50 cent and
the article piece is going to be about him. Some images look like they’re done
in the studio but not all of them, some of them look like live shots e.g. the
new order on there all laughing it sort of looks like there not ready for the
picture.
Cover story
The cover
story is the biggest image usually on the front cover; this is usually the one
that gets the most reads out of all the articles. It has a puff on the image to
tell the readers that it is the cover story or to remind them maybe. The big
articles seem to have a big black boarder around it for it to stand out more
than the other article.
Page numbers
There a little circle on each article telling you what page
it is on so it is quick access to the reader. Also they have a summary of what
the article is going to be about. This is very good because then the reader can
chose to read it or not cause then they already have a feel and a taste what it
is going to be about and won’t need to read it if not interested.
Layout
The contents page is over two pages so it’s a double page
spread, because it is a monthly magazine it has more information so it needs to
be over two pages. It is organised into 4 columns and looks very neat and
tidy. Each article is separated with a
line to indicate that it is not the same article and I think that is good so
that the readers know. The articles of the contents pages the numbers are in
order starting from the smallest to the biggest e.g. 8-130.
The gutter is also there at the bottom of the page with the
date logo and page number.
Colour
There is a good amount of colour on this contents page. The
colour is mainly the page numbers, changing colours when it’s a different
article makes in convenient makes it very attractive and fun to look at, it
gives the sense that every article is different with the different colours
used. We’ve have got dark black fonts to make the title of the article stand
out. The font is all the same on the contents page and that is font consistency.
Sections
There are 3 sections in this content page of the Q magazine
the cover story, features and the review but Q magazine has called it ‘The Q
review’ which is the regulars and all the gigs that has been done over the
month.
The features are every story that has been done in the
magazine and that is in each column of the contents page. The cover story is
the main story and would mostly likely take most pages in the magazine. I think
that not all of the editorial items are listed only some of them are and that
is the main ones.
DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Main Image
The main image is big and eye catching the image is in the centre of the page
and as we know as readers our eyes naturally goes towards the centre of the
page. The image is U2 performing at a concerts and all the fans cheering
looking very happy to see them. This is a very good image because it shows
their success and their bands future. Also this is a live action shot meaning
it wasn’t taken in the studio it was taken by a reporter or a fan this is good
because it gives the reader the feeling that there and watching the band U2.
The band mate looks very happy and edgy likes his achieved something really big
with his arm in the air giving him a sense of accomplishment.
Drop capitals
This drop cap covers the whole of the paragraph and is red
the colours is very vibrant and pulls the reader into reading that
paragraph. It also overlaps the image
because the paragraph is describing some of the picture as well. This drop cap
is used very well it also links to the Q magazines logo.
Anecdote
The double page spread is opened with a short story mainly
describing the image. This is a good way to usually start a double page spread
a short story to get the reader reading to let them know more about the person
experience and this is exactly what is done here, they have opened with an
interesting story telling us how U2 is performing in Boston in the image and
how over 20,000 rise expectantly for bono. The last line that is said in that
paragraph is ‘like a moths to a flame’ meaning that there all surrounding bono
he represents the flame and the fans represent to moths surrounding him being
so excited that there is light.
Layout
The cover story is being layout by having a paragraph under
the image and the rest of the article is being separated into columns, this is
two columns. Yes it does target the target audience well this will target
anyone interested in U2 or anyone that likes their genre of music. They have
pull out quotes on the site at the top of the article saying “hands up if you
love free downloads” this is what bono said to the crowd in Boston.
Bonus info
This is extra information on the band mate bono saying what
he believes in. This is just a bit more for the fans to read on this double
page spread and it gives the page more to talk about the band.
Colour
The colour is mainly red, white and black. A little bit
borrowing but its simple there is not a whole load that is going on and that is
good you don’t want to jam pack the reader with so much but you don’t want to
give the so much the red can represent the Q magazine logo from the front cover.
This article is about U2
touring experience and there ups and downs in their careers. With accidents
that caused a lot of setbacks and their best album downloading onto everyone’s
iTunes this cause a lot of problems. The article also involves an interview with
bono (one of the band mates of U2) asking him questions about his band and if
he believes in bad luck because the band has so many bad times.

Initial Ideas for my Magazine proposal
Magazine Proposal
Title: Fusion, The Collective, Diverse,
Genre: Rock,
Indie and sometimes going into R&B and Pop.
Artists:
Lana Del Rey, Florence and the machine, new order.
Today in class i started my magazine proposal thinking of names of my music magazine and the genre i related it to one of my case studies called Q Magazine and realised that they explore different genres and don't stick top just to one. I thought of artist that i can relate it to and involve.
Ideas from my Case studies
Front Cover
Contents Page
Double Page Spread
- One main image which will be the background of the image. Maybe a cover-line with an attached image.
- The masthead has to be big and really stand out to the target audience. has to be short and memorable like for example 'Q magazine'.
- The cover lines would appear at the bottom have a bright colour to stand out over the main image maybe two pictures relating to the article.
- The barcode, date and price would show at the side
- Maybe another image at the top not top big decent size explaining another article
Contents Page
- Have a heading for the contents page for example 'Q contents' i like the way they have used the date on the contents page and it stands out this would be an idea for my music magazine.
- Is over two pages and four columns and has an image for each article.
- 'The Q review has its own separate box and has its own columns mainly
- Each article has a page number on the contents page and it's almost like a puff and i like that because it stands out a lot.
- I like the way this double page spread has one main image and opens the piece with a short story.
- Has 2 columns and drop cap doesn't have too much colour they kept is simple the only colour is read and the links to the Q magazine logo that stands out a lot because there is a link and because it was the main article as well.
- On the image it has a little interview with Bono from the band U2 this can help audience get more info from the band and i think that i will add that to my music magazine

College Magazine Evaluation
Process
For the cover page of college magazine I made it on Photoshop with this I wanted to achieve a good example of a front cover of a college magazine by doing this I had to look at other college magazines looking at their layout and conventions that they have used and I try to add that to my own college magazine. For the front cover I had to add the masthead and the cover lines, I learnt that the main story in the magazine has to relate to the image and needs to be the biggest out of all the other cover lines. but not as big as the masthead. I made the contents page on In Design I wanted to achieve a good contents page by giving it a main image and a smaller image making it have two columns, the picture of the sports hall was not that great and i know what i need to improve on when it comes to the music magazine.
Self evaluate
Good
- The layout: the use of cover lines, the way I have made some cover lines bigger and some smaller this is good because the main story stands out more. The masthead stands out very well and is very clear.
- The colour scheme: The colour of the text stands out very well on the image. The background is green.

Contents page
Hafsa : Good: I like the colour scheme i think it works well for a student magazine.
Bad: you have a bit too much white and looks a bit boring.
I am going to take these comments on board and apply it to my final outcome which will be the music magazine. I will choose a better colour scheme because that was one of my main feed backs that i got that was negative. and also to change the pricing so it looks more prfessional.
